Céline and Michiel have been managing one of the most popular YouTube channels in Flanders for years. They recently reached one million followers, and that can seriously count as a milestone. That is why they will soon receive a golden Play Button from YouTube. It sends the company to any content creator who has one million followers. “We are very proud and grateful that we were able to achieve this. Now on to the two million”, says CEMI.

The couple discovers the good news thanks to Michiel’s parents. “They called us in,” explains CEMI. “We were shooting a video outside at the time. They said, ‘You have 999,990 subscribers, let’s count down together inside’. (laughs) Through a ‘live subscriber count‘ we did that until we had one million followers. When you consider how many people that is: very crazy.”

Michiel has been making videos since 2012. He starts with an English-language football channel, where he regularly uploads content from 2016. In 2018 he gets to know Céline, who not much later participates in such a football video. In the summer of 2019, CEMI, the couple’s Dutch-language channel, will be a fact. They share their lives on YouTube through vlogs and videos. “We try to entertain people,” the couple explains. “We often do that through all sorts of things challenges to start. We have a positive attitude to life, and we try to convey that – in a consistent way – to our viewers. Of course we also have less moments, but we don’t share them on social media very often. And we also have a private life besides our videos.”
CEMI is also active on TikTok and Instagram. And yes, they have a lot of followers there too. They all have certain expectations that the couple wants to meet. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves about the things we post,” they say. “It’s not always easy to find something new that we can then share. There is always a lot of time in a video. It’s a full-time job, even though Michiel’s mom didn’t believe it at first. (laughs)”
A younger audience in particular is a fan of the couple, and according to their own words, CEMI focuses on young people between the ages of six and eighteen. Céline and Michiel have provided merchandise for those fans. Sweaters, t-shirts, socks and even earrings from the YouTubers are successful. In addition, CEMI also ventures into songs: ‘So special’ and ‘Merry Christmas’. Their work has already been rewarded with a Golden K for ‘YouTube hit of the year’. And then there’s ‘Rewind’, the duo’s very first film. The release is expected this fall, and will undoubtedly ensure that the duo becomes even more popular. “Everywhere we go, we have our picture taken,” the couple says. And that is sometimes in the weirdest places. “During the break at a football match, Michiel went to the public toilet. While he was peeing, the man next to him asked, “Michiel, when you’re done, can my son be in the picture later?” That was a funny moment,” Céline laughs.
Playing soccer with Ronaldo
Their success certainly does not harm CEMI. For example, the couple indicates that their online presence has a positive influence on their bank account – although they prefer not to say what amounts that are. “We are very happy that we could turn our passion into our profession”, it sounds. “Hopefully we can keep this up for a long time to come.” And who knows, Céline’s big dream may come true. “A football challenge against my great idol, the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo. That would be great!”
