Romana was featured in B&B Vol Liefde last year. She then hoped to build a life with Bert, but that turned out completely different. In an interview with LINDA Romana looks back on the hectic period.
looking for love
Romana went to France for Bert. “I really liked Bert’s promotional video, showing how he walked through the French countryside with his dog. My aunt had pointed me to him, she thought he was something for me. I applied in March and two weeks before my departure in May, I heard that he had chosen me. I really liked Bert’s promo video of how he walked through the French countryside with his dog. My aunt had pointed me to him, she thought he was something for me. I applied in March and two weeks before my departure in May, I heard that he had chosen me,” Romana said. “In the meantime, more videos of Bert came online. When I saw that he was walking the Pieterpad with his backpack, I thought: wow, this is not my type at all. This isn’t for me. But a few days before my stay, I was fired from work because of the pandemic. At Schiphol I worked behind customs, in perfumery and cosmetics. I thought: what have I got to lose?”
Romana experienced the first meeting with Bert as ‘a bit uncomfortable’. “He was nervous about Formula 1. If I came it had to be before or after the race, not during. Of course I didn’t know that. Finally I came in just before the race and we sat together in front of his little TV. Not a big deal, I like to watch too. But then you wait so long for the first woman to come by and then you want to see Formula 1 first. Not very gallant. But that’s Bert, you can’t blame him. He is purely himself.” Still, it clicked pretty well at first. “I quickly felt at ease and Bert and I felt good about each other. I thought it was one big adventure to participate in the program. I just went to France on my own!”
No love, but a nice adventure
Unfortunately, that beautiful adventure ultimately did not yield any love. “We women have been cast incorrectly for Bert”, says Romana. “It’s good that he participated. Sure, it was fun television and pretty uncomfortable. But we didn’t fit the image he had of his ideal woman. That soon became clear. Bert should have cared more about us. He didn’t get us to do fun things together or anything. But that’s how he is.” And that’s why Romana decided not to just leave. “We had a good time together, there were nice jokes between us. The days went by so fast too. But if something had really blossomed between him and another woman, I would have left sooner, you know. I don’t want to be in that. Only that didn’t happen, so I stayed. I had a nice room, I enjoyed the outdoors… Too bad there was no love in the air.”
Contact after B&B
In the meantime, contact with Bert has dwindled. “We texted for a while, but nothing more. I don’t need him as a friend either. I am still in contact with Annemarie, we have seen each other twice. But we live quite far apart, so you don’t meet that often. And there’s no love in my life either, it says on hold† I also don’t do dating apps or sites. I’m pretty single without kids. It’s not like I’ve always been sitting still, mind you. I’ve had so many short and long relationships, lived together so many times… But not now. If a nice guy passes by, he can definitely ring my doorbell.”
