Zelenski at Grammy Awards: ‘Fill the death silence with your music’

He spoke, among other things, about the contrast between music and the silence ‘of destroyed cities and killed people’.

‘Tell our story’

“We are fighting against Russia, which is causing a terrible silence with its bombs. The silence of death,” Zelensky said. “Fill that silence with your music. Today. Tell our story. Tell the truth about war, on television, on social media. Support us in any way you can. Anyway, but not with silence.”

Cross-border behavior was also indirectly reflected during the award ceremony. There was afterwards quite a bit of commotion about the Grammy winnings of American comedian Louis CK, who came under fire in 2017 for sexual misconduct. It won in the Best Comedy Album category. Many people quickly concluded on social media that the so-called ‘cancel culture’ apparently does not exist at all.

Noah, Rock, Smith

Grammys host Trevor Noah also briefly recalled the consternation that arose last week after Chris Rock insulted Will Smith’s wife at the Oscars. Smith slapped Rock for making a joke about the lack of hair on her head. Jada Smith suffers from the ‘baldness disease’ alopecia.

At the beginning of the Grammys show, Noah promised not to ‘mouth mouth’ some of them, referring to what Smith Rock said at the Oscars: ‘”Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”

Four awards Jon Batiste

But in the end it was all about the music again. Jon Batiste won the Grammy for album of the year with We Are. Earlier in the evening, the artist already received three Grammys for his songs Freedom and Cry, and for his contribution to the soundtrack of the film Soul. The Grammy for Batiste also has a Dutch touch: music producer Tearce Kizzo was closely involved in the creation of We Are under his stage name Kizzo.

Silk Sonic, the joint R&B project of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, won the Grammy for Song of the Year for the single Leave The Door Open. The duo surprisingly defeated singers Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo in the prestigious category. The latter did win in the category of best new artist. Silk Sonic also won the Grammy for record of the year.

Afrojack and Tiesto

The rock band Foo Fighters won, a week after the sudden death of its drummer Taylor Hawkins, in three categories: best rock album, best rock song and best rock performance.

The Dutch DJs Afrojack and Tiësto did not win any prizes. The two went up for a Grammy in the best dance song category, but saw the song Alive by Rüfüs Du Sol take the win.

The Dutch composer Louis Andriessen also did not win a Grammy posthumously. The musician, who died last year, was nominated in the contemporary classical composition category.

86 categories

The Grammy Awards consist of 86 categories, divided over the different music genres. Musicians from all genres compete for the four top prizes: album of the year, newcomer of the year, song of the year and record of the year.

The most important music prizes in the world were finally awarded to a full house after two years. This was impossible in the past two editions due to the corona measures.

Actually, the Grammys were supposed to be awarded in January, but the show was moved due to the corona pandemic. A different location was also chosen: the MGM Grand in Las Vegas instead of Los Angeles.
