The Best Hidden Gems on HBO Max

On HBO Max you will find all kinds of big names such as Game of Thrones, Euphoria, Succession, The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Friends and so on. But that can make it difficult to find the hidden gems. Series that are more than worth your time, but that don’t turn on as quickly as you scroll through the offer. That’s why we give you a hand with five hidden viewing tips on HBO Max.

1. Schitts Creek

A wealthy family loses their home and money, then moves to a cheap motel in the village of Schitts Creek. There they have to get used to their new poor existence and the strange people around them, but slowly they become an indispensable part of this community. A hilarious series that just gets better and better every season.

2. In Treatment

This series has a simple, but very effective concept. You follow a therapy session in each episode. In the first three seasons with Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston. Interestingly, the clients keep coming back, so you can see their growth. In the meantime, you will also learn more and more about the life of Dr. West itself. In the fourth season, Uzo Aduba, who you know from Orange is the New Black, takes over.

3. I May Destroy You

You probably know Michaela Coel as an actress, but Coel can do so much more. She made the comedy series Chewing Gum herself and last year made the particularly heavy series I May Destroy You, which is about the mental burden after surviving a rape. A very good series with a strong Coel in the writing chair and leading role.

4. How to With John Wilson

Documentary maker John Wilson films an incredible amount of material in the city of New York. Afterwards, he looks for fragments that have something to do with each other, he comes up with a topic and interviews special people from the city who fit that topic. With a dry voice, Wilson is your guide through New York and his own life every episode. Wonderful television full of fascinating images and special people.

5. Our Flag Means Death

This is secretly a brand new series, but one that is easy to overlook. Our Flag Means Death is about the gentleman pirate, a decent man who leaves his family behind to become a pirate.

He turns out not to be very good at that and his crew is also very stupid. Then he encounters the dreaded pirate Blackbeard (played by Taika Waititi) and a special bond forms between the two.
