The 5 Best Science Fiction Movies You’re Watching Right Now on HBO Max

Science fiction appeals to the imagination and is a favorite film genre for many, especially our editors. HBO Max understands that too. It is not without reason that the streaming service, now also available in the Netherlands, has included the best science fiction films in its range.

We’ve rounded up the five best science fiction movies now available on HBO Max.

Science Fiction Movies You’re Watching Right Now on HBO Max

The list below consists of absolute masterpieces, which you can safely view more than once. At the top of the list is a science fiction film that has been around for a while, but is at least as topical today.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

So let’s start right off with a stunner, which is considered one of the best science fiction movies of all time. This classic was released in 1968, so before the first moon landing. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a timeless masterpiece that addresses themes such as the danger of artificial intelligence, extraterrestrial life and reincarnation.

The film consists of four acts. The first chapter ‘Dawn of Man’ takes the viewer back to prehistoric times, where a group of great apes make an important discovery. They learn how to smash each other’s brains with an object. One flash forward later we see a shot of an orbital weapon platform in orbit.

In Act 2, untitled, a monolith is discovered that sends a strong signal to Jupiter. That should of course be investigated. And that happens. In Act 3 ‘Jupiter Mission’ a group of astronauts depart for Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. Also on board the spaceship is HAL 9000, an AI that is getting smarter, but also more dangerous. The last chapter of 2001: A Space Odyssey is a pure LSD trip; a visual tour de force and a worthy conclusion to this great film.

2. Blade Runner (1982)

The original Blade Runner from 1982 with none other than our very own Rutger Hauer who stars alongside Harrison Ford. Loosely based on the classic science fiction book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? from 1968, and directed by none other than Ridley Scott.

The film to be streamed on HBO Max is a beautiful visual adventure, in which we blade runner Follow Deckard hunting replicants. The film is set in dystopian 2019 Los Angeles where the world has fallen into disrepair due to pollution and overpopulation. An absolute must and a great opportunity to admire one of the few Dutch actors who did make it in Hollywood.

3. Inception (2010)

Leonardo DiCaprio received his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Revenant† Well deserved, but he should have received this recognition much earlier, namely for his contribution to Inceptionone of the most original science fiction films of this century.

A visual masterpiece by director Christopher Nolan, which you actually have to see two or three times before you really understand the story. The film has several layers and is rather complicated. Briefly explained, it is about planting a seed in a dream in a dream in a dream. Do you still get it?

4. Soloist (1972)

Not everything that comes from Russia is necessarily bad. soldier Dating back to the time of the Soviet Union, it is certainly one of the best science fiction films ever made. Thankfully, HBO Max didn’t cancel the classic.

soldier is set in the distant future on a space station orbiting the planet Solyaris. On Earth, doubts arise about the mental state of the scientists aboard the station. Reason enough to send a psychologist to assess the situation. In (2002) appeared a rehash (remake) with George Clooney in the lead role.

5. The Matrix (1999)

Forget that uninspired remake that was recently released and just watch the 1999 original. The Matrix was a groundbreaking, innovative science fiction blockbuster with cool effects, such as bullet time

Enjoy the boring office yo-yo slowly emerging as NEO, hero of the Matrix universe. This cool movie is directed by the Wachowski brothers. Um, sisters these days. Part 2 and 3 followed later, and recently part 4. You can simply skip the last part and should certainly not be mentioned in the same breath as the best science fiction films.
