Floortje Dessing travels to one of the poorest countries in the world

Northwest of Madagsker you will find the Comoros: a tropical island group with a particularly rich nature. The population, on the other hand, is one of the poorest in the world. The new episode of Floortje to the end of the world shows the special nature and culture of the country.

“They live in the Comoros as they did in Africa 30, 40 years ago,” says the host of the guesthouse where Dessing is staying. Poverty and the lack of jobs are driving young people to Europe. A shame, because according to the host “it is a unique place on earth with beautiful landscapes and beaches”.

Floortje to the end of the world

Dessing travels on to the small island of Mohéli by taxi and fishing boat. There she meets the Slovakian Richard and the French Anne, who run their own diving school. The couple lives in a small hut in the middle of the beach. One thing that immediately strikes Dessing is the minimalist design of the two. “We have always lived in nature,” says Richard. “Then you don’t need stuff to entertain yourself. Only goggles and flippers. We then go swimming with the turtles and mantas around the coral reef.”

The clear blue sea and the colorful coral look beautiful indeed. Even if you have lived there for ten years, the area is still beautiful. “I keep discovering something new,” says Richard, looking out to sea with Dessing on the beach. “We recently discovered that there are coconut crabs on the island. We didn’t know that.”

Women at the head of the community

Despite all the beautiful aspects of life on the island, there are also difficulties. For example, Anne thinks that she and Richard will never be fully integrated into the community. “We will always be foreigners. Even though Richard speaks the local language fluently, he is and remains a white man. They look at him differently.”

Remarkably enough, women do have a good position on the island. “Women are at the head of the community, just as they are in the family. If the man wants a divorce, the women can keep everything,” says Anne.

Viewing drama for Jinek

Yesterday’s episode managed to score about 1,682,000 viewers. With that know Floortje to the end of the world to come back to number 2 on the list of most watched programs. The fact that Eva Jinek is still at home with a throat infection and therefore cannot present her program can be seen in the viewing figures. With Humberto Tan as a replacement, the program only scores 507,000 viewers, which means that Jinek falls outside the top 25 for the first time.
