Rock made a joke about GI Jane, a movie in which Demi Moore plays a soldier with that nickname with cropped hair. Pinkett-Smith could star in GI Jane 2 like this, according to Rock, referring to the lack of hair on her head. Smith reacted furiously: After hitting Rock, he said, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.” The incident was clearly not staged.
alopecia
On social media, many people quickly pointed out to their followers that Jada Pinkett-Smith suffers from alopecia, a condition that causes a person to become partially or completely bald. Those present in the room did not seem well aware of the incident. Photos of several stars in shock at the moment it happened quickly circulated on social media.
Watch Will Smith pack a punch here:
A little later, Smith himself won an Oscar for his role in King Richard, about the childhood of the tennis sisters Serena and Venus Williams. It was the third time Smith had been nominated, but the first time he had won the Academy Award.
Tears rolled down his cheeks during Smith’s acceptance speech. He apologized to the Academy for the incident earlier in the evening. Smith made no apologies to Rock.
Child of Deaf Adult
The film CODA became the big winner of the evening. In addition to the Oscar for best picture, it also won the awards for best screenplay and best supporting actor. This makes CODA the big winner of the evening, next to Dune who won six technical prizes.
CODA, which stands for Child Of Deaf Adult, is about teenage Ruby, the only hearing person in a deaf fishing family who dreams of a singing career. Kotsur plays her father Frank in the film. All speeches for CODA were also presented in sign language.
Tension about the Oscars was already rising before the ceremony, also because of the attention for Ukraine:
Power of the Dog
New Zealand director Jane Campion won the Academy Award for her work on The Power of the Dog. She was the third female director to win the most important film award in the world.
Otherwise, however, The Power of the Dog was the big loser of the evening. Netflix’s western had 12 nominations but only won one frame for best director.
encanto
Disney film Encanto took home the Academy Award for best animated film.
Encanto is about the Colombian Madrigal family, who live in a magical house. All family members also have a gift of their own, except for the main character, teenager Mirabel.
Attention to Ukraine
The organization behind the Academy Awards held a moment of silence during the ceremony for the victims of the Russian attack on Ukraine. There were also many Hollywood stars who wore a ribbon to support Ukraine.
Hans Zimmer
Hans Zimmer won an Oscar last night for his work on the movie Dune. However, the well-known composer is currently touring Europe and celebrated winning his Academy Award in a hotel bar in Amsterdam.
“It’s 2AM in Amsterdam,” Zimmer tweeted, “And my daughter Zoë just woke me up to go to the hotel bar. Wow!!” Zoë Zimmer had come to the Netherlands well prepared: in a photo that the composer placed with the message, a souvenir Oscar sticks out of the pocket of his bathrobe.
And the Oscar goes to…
