Hollywood is getting ready for the Oscars ceremony: these are all expectations | Oscars 2022

OscarsThe 94th Academy Awards or the Oscars will be presented on Sunday night (Belgium time). In total there are 23 statuettes to be won. Top favorite is ‘The Power of the Dog’: the gloomy western by New Zealand director Jane Campion has been nominated twelve times and has a chance to win eleven Oscars. ‘Dune’, the film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel directed by Denis Villeneuve, garnered ten nominations.

‘The Power of the Dog’ is one of ten nominees in the Best Picture category. ‘Belfast’, ‘CODA’, ‘Don’t Look Up’, ‘Drive My Car’, ‘Dune’, ‘King Richard’, ‘Licorice Pizza’, ‘Nightmare Alley’ and ‘West Side Story’ also have a chance to win the coveted statue.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays a quirky rancher in ‘The Power of the Dog’, has a chance to win the Oscar for Best Actor, as well as Kirsten Dunst (Best Supporting Actress) and Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smith-McPhee (both in the Best Male category). supporting role) have been nominated. In addition, the film garnered nominations in the categories Best Director, Cinematography, Editing, Original Music, Production Design, Sound and Adapted Screenplay. The film is an adaptation of Thomas Savage’s 1967 book of the same name.

According to Variety, Campion is making history by becoming the first woman to be nominated twice for the Oscar for best director. She was nominated in 1994 for ‘The Piano’. She also faced American director Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), who won seven Oscars that year for “Schindler’s List.” Striking: Spielberg has been nominated eight times for the Oscar for best director throughout his career. In total, only seven women have been nominated in that category, only two (Kathryn Bigelow and Chloé Zhao) were able to cash in on the nomination.

Best Movie and Supporting Actor

‘The Power of the Dog’ is the obvious winner in the best film category, but ‘CODA’ is close to the western. The acronym stands for ‘child of deaf adults’: the film is a coming-of-age of the only hearing member in a deaf family. That the deaf actor Troy Kotsur can be sure of his Oscar in the category best supporting actor, seems to be a fact. He is the first male deaf actor to receive an Oscar nomination for acting. Kotsur also won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA for his role in ‘CODA’.

Ariana Debose seems equally confident in the Best Supporting Actress category. She has already won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA for her role in ‘West Side Story’. Will Smith has also won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA for his role as Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, in ‘King Richard’. He has a chance to win the Oscar for best actor on Sunday night.

In the category of best international film, the Japanese ‘Drive My Car’ seems to have a chance of winning the statue: after all, it is the only one of the nominees that also has a chance at an Oscar for best film. Also in the category of best international film are the popular ‘The Worst Person in The World’ and the documentary ‘Flee’, both Danish-made. The latter writes history as a film that has been nominated in the categories best animation, best documentary and best foreign film.

The Oscars are graced by nominees in the Best Music Song category. Beyoncé (“Be Alive” in “King Richard”), Billie Eilish and brother Finneas O’Connell (“No Time To Die” in the movie of the same name), Reba McEntire (“Somehow You Do” in “Four Good Days”) and Sebastián Yatra (‘Dos Oruguitas’ in ‘Encanto’) will perform. The cast of ‘Encanto’ will perform ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ live for the first time. Van Morrison was also invited to perform ‘Down To Joy’ (from ‘Belfast’), but had to cancel due to his tour.

The award show will look a little different this year. The actresses Wanda Skyes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall present the ceremony, for the first time the hosts are three women. In response to declining viewership, the Academy cut eight awards from the ceremony. The awards ceremony for make-up and hairstyling, editing, sound, production design and original soundtrack, as well as three awards for short films, are pre-recorded and edited and later taped into the broadcast of the ceremony. Finally, fans can vote for their favorite movie and movie moment this year.
